The Solanco JV girls softball team had a very successful 2013 season. The Mules went 16-1 with the lone loss coming in a time-shortened game. Solanco hit for a team average of .450 for the season which included 51 extra base hits. The Mules connected on 17 home runs, 10 triples, and 24 doubles. The Mules outscored their opponents 249-29. "We were able to compete in and win some big games this year against some really good teams," coach Chad McDowell said. "We went to Hempfield in mid-April and handed Hempfield their lone loss of the year, 10-2. We then bounced right back the next day and took on a once beaten Cedar Crest team and handed them a loss in a highly competitive game, 7-1. We also had big games against Penn Manor, Warwick, Cocalico, and Elizabethtown."
Pitcher Kalyn Burger was 10-1 with 98 strikeouts and only 18 walks. Makayla Pluck was 3-0 with 13 strike outs in three games of work. Kasey Williams was 2-0 with nine strikeouts in three games of work. Kelsey Bastien was 1-0 with nine strikeouts in two games. "As a pitching staff, I thought all of our pitchers did an outstanding job," said McDowell. "They all worked hard all season and made significant improvements as the season progressed. Each one had good velocity and moved the ball through the strike zone keeping batters off balance." Megan Yannutz led the team with a .692 batting average. She had four homeruns and had 31 RBI's. "Megan really saw the ball well this year and she had a solid year at the plate," said McDowell. Kayla Schneider had a .588 batting average. "In multiple games, Kayla had timely hits that scored some key runs," McDowell said. Samantha Heidelbaugh had a .571 batting average in limited action this season due to an injury. Bekah Borcky hit .500 on the season and had three homeruns and had 30 RBI's. "Bekah had an aggressive approach at the plate and hit the ball well," said the coach. Autumn Johnson had a .480 batting average. "Autumn had a solid year at the plate," said McDowell. "She used her speed to get on base and scored lots of runs." Haley Conklin had a .464 batting average with four homeruns and 19 RBIs. "Haley struggled early in the season but rebounded nicely when we moved her into the four spot in the lineup," McDowell said. Haley Pittman had a .400 batting average. "Haley did in great job in the leadoff spot in the line up," said McDowell. "We could always count on Haley to get on base and give us a jump start early in games." Kelsey Bastien had a .382 batting average. "Kelsey was asked to do many different things at the plate and she did a great job embracing all challenges presented to her," the coach said. Makayla Pluck had a .382 batting average with two homers "Makayla was also selective at the plate and managed to lead the team in walks, collecting 23 this season," said McDowell. Sydney Sturgill had a .364 batting average. "She flourished in the roll of the number nine hitter," McDowell said. "Her job was to get on base and turn the lineup over to the top. Sydney collected 21 walks and seemed to always be on base." Kalyn Burger had a .323 batting average with a home run. "Kayln was consistent and made contact when we needed a hit," said McDowell. Julianna Zak scored 14 runs on the season. "Julianna had several games when she was asked to be a courtesy runner," McDowell said. "Julianna was one of our most aggressive base runners and put pressure on the defense to make plays which was a key to many wins." "Overall, Coach Bauermaster and myself thought this was a successful season for the team," said McDowell. "Each girl worked hard and improved their games as the season progressed. I think they all learned more about the game of softball and I think they had a lot of fun doing so...and we spelled fun this year...W-I-N!" Comments are closed.
