Alice Rebecca Owens Jones of Port Deposit died at home Friday, February 16, 2018. She was 97.
Born April 22, 1920 in Cokesbury, Port Deposit, she was the daughter of the late Marshall Jenifer and the late Edna Kell Owens. Joan Marie McGowan, 80 of Elkton, MD, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 in the Laurelwood Nursing and Rehabilitation, Elkton, MD.
Born in Baltimore, MD, on April 30, 1937, she was the daughter of the late William and Clara Strobel. She was the wife of the late Gordon E. McGowan who passed January 19, 2018. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. McGowan worked as a secretary in the insurance industry. Arthur Granville Ford, III, 69 years, of Perryville, MD, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018 at home. Born November 8, 1948 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Arthur G. Ford, Jr., and Rita C. Countess Ford.
Mr. Ford was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was formerly employed as a Parole Officer and Chief Clerk of the Circuit Court for Harford County, Bel Air, MD. He is survived by his son, Arthur G. Ford, IV, of Perryville, MD; daughter, Lynda K. Shrewsbury of Perryville, MD; four grandchildren; and brother, James Howard Ford. Gerald Franklin Thomas, 81 years, of Port Deposit, MD, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018 in York Hospital of York, PA. Born May 21, 1936 in Elkton, MD, he was the son of the late Dan Oscar Thomas and Grace Meriam Miller Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served from 1954 until 1957. He was formerly employed by the Aberdeen Proving Ground of Aberdeen, MD, as an experimental test driver. He was also a local barber for many years. Mr. Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 54 years of marriage, Shirley Ann Patrick Thomas of Port Deposit, MD; son, Kevin Thomas of Port Deposit, MD; daughters, Denise Tollinger and husband, Leo Tollinger, Jr., of New Providence, PA, and Shannon Absher and husband, Steve, of Conowingo, MD; five grandchildren, Shianne Absher Leonard and husband, Kyle, Hunter Tollinger, Garrett Absher, Casey Tollinger, and Makayla; one great grandson, Colton James; sisters, Betty Holbrook and Wanda Andrews. Alta R. (Thomas) Nickle, 79 of Ovations at Elk View, West Grove, PA, died Thursday, February 15, 2018 in the Jennersville Regional Hospital, West Grove, PA. Born in Lewistown, PA, on October 12, 1938, she was the daughter of William and Frances (Mitchell) Thomas. Alta was a graduate of Chief Logan High School, Class of 1956. She retired as a Vice President of the Mortgage Loan Department, employed by WSFS. Alta, a friend to everyone she met and the worlds ”greatest wife”, the first women president of the Delaware Chapter of the American Institute of Banking. She and her husband traveled to many parts of the world, walked together on the Great Wall of China, sailed around Cape Horn, visited the southernmost city in the world and came within 300 miles of the North Pole. Survived by her husband: C. Paul Nickle; sister: Frances Penepecker of Lewistown, PA; brother: William Thomas (Lila) of Lewistown, PA; stepson: Roger Nickle (Lee) of Bear, DE; stepdaughter: Suzanne Moore of Milford, DE; sister-in-law: Barbara Thomas of FL. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. James Peter Langhorne, Jr., 57 of North East, MD, died Friday, February 16, 2018 in the Union Hospital of Cecil County, Elkton, MD. Born in Elkton, on March 14, 1960, he was the son of the late James Peter, Sr. and Winnie Iola (Bumgarner) Langhorne. He served in the Army. Pete enjoyed his time furthering his education at Cecil Community College. He was a concrete finisher, employed by Breslin Construction, Inc. He is survived by one daughter: Noelle C. Bolingbroke (Jason) of Frederica, DE and two sons: James and Adam Langhorne both of Havre de Grace, MD; three sisters: Jane Parrack (Robert), and Bonnie Mullen (Skip) both of Elkton, MD and Wanda Langhorne of North East, MD; one brother: Brian Langhorne of Elkton, MD; and his granddaughter: Alexis. Allen B. McCall, 69 of Perryville, MD, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2018 in the University of Maryland Center, Baltimore, MD.
Born in North East, MD, on August 23, 1948, he was the son of the late Frank L. and Alice (Baker) McCall. Mr. McCall worked for DuPont Co. as an electrician, retiring after 28 years of service. He played bass in many local bands, enjoyed old cars and was a member of the Classic Chevy Club. The light of his life were his three grandchildren and he loved the time he spent with them. Dean Melvin Ragan, Jr., age 24, of West Plains, MO, passed away on February 6, 2018. Born on December 13, 1993 in Killeen, TX, he was the son of Dean Melvin, Sr. and Virginia Marie (McMullen) Ragan.
DJ worked proudly as an over the road truck driver for many years. He greatly enjoyed listening to music, cars, and was a huge fan of the Denver Broncos. DJ loved spending time with his friends and family, but his most cherished moments were those spent with his daughter, Chyain, the light of his life. DJ is survived by his father, Dean Melvin Ragan, Sr. and his companion, Dawne Lucas; mother, Virginia Marie Ragan; daughter, Chyain Ragan; brother, Randy Ragan and his wife, Grace; half-sister, Kristina Halderman; paternal grandparents, Delilah and Bob Truslow; maternal grandmother, Monika McMullen; and several extended family members and friends. DJ was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Walter Ragan, Sr., and maternal grandfather, Lloyd McMullen. Armenia Grace Osborne, 90, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away on Tuesday, February 6 2018, at home. She was the wife of the late Robert Osborne and first husband Dale Miller. Born August 22, 1927 in West Jefferson, NC, she was the daughter of the late Dewey and Corina Phillips Miller. Grace was a member of the Nottingham Missionary Baptist Church. She was employed as a secretary at Bainbridge N.T.C., The Budd Co., Newark, DE and N.V.F., Kennett Square, PA. Grace enjoyed working in her flower garden, cooking for friends and church dinners and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Doris Jean Simpers of North East died Tuesday, February 6, 2018, in the Calvert Manor Healthcare Center, Rising Sun. She was 94.
