by Bud Hart Hempfield entered the pasture undefeated on Monday, April 24, but the Section I leader found the Mules a real challenge as Solanco downed the red and black 7-1. Down 1-0 coming into the bottom of the third inning, Kate Sheaffer singled with one out. Abby Heidelbaugh, the Mule leadoff hitter, who popped out to the pitcher in the first, sent a line shot over the left fielder’s head for a two-run home run giving the Mules a 2-1 lead.
Hempfield tied it up in the top of the fourth behind a one-out Texas leaguer to center, a Mule dropped infield pop and a two-out single. Solanco broke the game open in the bottom half of the inning when junior Kayla May led off the inning with a double. Following an infield fly caught by the Knight first baseman and a K, Alyssa Henretty singled May home. Henretty stole second and Sheaffer singled her home. Sheaffer stole second with Heidelbaugh at the plate. Both runners scored when the Hempfield defense went south committing three errors on a bobbled ball allowing both Sheaffer and Heidelbaugh to score. Kara McClune ended the scoring with a one-out round tripper in the bottom of the sixth. While she didn’t score or drive in a run in this contest, Randi Rambo, the number three hitter, went three for four in the 12-hit Mule offense. “Randi Rambo has been swinging the bat well and had had some tough outs,” said head coach Brett Miller. “So a three for four game against a quality pitcher was nice to see.” Hanna Phillips struck out 10 going the distance inside the circle. The sophomore walked three and retired five of the last 10 Hempfield batters on K’s. She set the side down in order in the top of the seventh with two K’s and a 4-3 groundout. “Another solid offensive team effort with improving defensive play,” said Miller. “You earn a positive result against an undefeated quality team.” Miller also praised his young pitcher. “Hanna has been elevating her overall pitching the past several games,” said Miller. “As the Section games become more critical down the stretch, she has certainly been more focused and pitching with more purpose.” This week the Mules oppose Lebanon (home), Manheim Township (away) and Elizabethtown (away) in a night game.
