The Solanco boys and girls track and field teams each improved to 2-0 with wins over host Elizabethtown Monday, March 30. "Despite the wind, both teams were able to earn wins," coach Ivan Haines said. "Both teams performed well with many personal bests even in the cold." The boys prevailed 107-39 highlighted by a record-tying performance by Billy Cooney. Cooney won the high hurdles in a time of 14.6 seconds, tying the mark set by Scott Wert in 1977.
It's one of the longest standing records in school history. The time also qualified Cooney for districts. Troy Miller recorded four first place finishes. He won long jump (19-8), high jump (6-0), 200 meters (24.2), and was part of the triumphant 4 x 100 relay team. Prosper Equzouwa (100) and Brit Yoder (400) each notched a win. "The boys team did really well," said Haines. "Many of the athletes were able to earn personal best. It has been a long time since the sprinters were able to outscore their opponents this big earning all but two points. Many of their times again were the best for the season and their career." Noah Brady earned firsts in the 800 and 1600 meters. Liam Hodgson won the 3200. "Another bright spot was the throwers who continue to improve every meet," said Haines. Gary Doubts threw a career-best 42-4 to win the shot put and Noah McCardell (132-9) prevailed in the javelin. "Again it was good to see many of the returning athletes starting where they ended last year," Haines said. "The boys’ team continues to improve and have not reached their potential." The Solanco girls triumphed 87-63. Sophomore Jenevieve Eberly earned four firsts. She won the high hurdles (16.6), 300 hurdles (51.6), and long jump (15-.5) and was part of the victorious 4 x 400 relay team. Seniors Natalie Crum (1600) and Carly Allport (800) were able to earn firsts in their open events plus in the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays. Brooke McCardell continues to improve in the triple jump (29-7.75) earning a first plus taking a first in the pole vault (9-0). Solanco won all three throwing events – Ashley Mundorff shot put (31-4.5), Rebecca Trimble discus (88-2), and Emily Conklin javelin (108-4) "It has been a long time since the girl throwers earned firsts in all three events by improving their distances for personal bests," Haines said. "We are looking forward to what the girls will be doing this year. What was nice to see was that all event areas were able to outscore their opponents. I am looking forward this year for a very successful year for this team." Comments are closed.
