The Solanco JV boys basketball team closed out the season with a 50-46 triumph over host Kennard Dale Friday. Troy Berry paced the Mules with 13 points. Curtis Herr had seven. Taylor Dombach supplied six and Colin Kilgore added five. Ken Walton and Ethan Cairns each contributed four. Cody Bleacher scored three points and Cole Boxleitner, Kyle Munro, Keith Carnrike, and Robbie McHugh each tallied two points.
After another slow start (KD held a 10-4 lead after the 1st quarter), we quickly changed our defense set by increasing our pressure and intensity," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "With the use of some aggressive trapping and up tempo style defense, we used a 19-6 second quarter run to take the halftime lead, 23-16. The second half was very competitive and we were able to execute down the stretch, by taking care of the basketball and making free throws. Ken Walton (2-2), Colin Kilgore (2-3), and Ethan Cairns (4-4) each stepped to the free throw line late in the fourth quarter and sealed the victory. I was very proud of the entire teams effort and ability to focus and execute at the end of the game, an area we have been focusing on recently. This will be a win that we will build on as we move into the offseason. Lots of positives." Cocalico downed Solanco 62-54 last Thursday. Cairns led the Mules with 14 points. Carnrike added seven and Noah McCardell mustered six. McHugh chipped in five points and Dawson Gote and Matt Gote each scored four points. This was a game that could be considered a tale of two halves," said McDowell. "Cocalico used some hot shooting in the first half to take a 15 point halftime lead (32-17). After some halftime adjustments were used some runs in the second half to chip away at their lead. At one point in the fourth quarter we got within four points. However, we were force to foul at the end of the game and they made their free throws. Cocalico is a well coached team and they always come ready to play. Our effort was there, especially in the second half, but need to do a better job piecing together four complete quarters." Conestoga Valley edged the Mules 49-47. Cairns and McHugh each recorded seven points. Berry, Dombach, Munro, and Matt Gote each added five. CV held a 32-18 halftime lead before the Mules rallied to take a 44-43 lead in the fourth quarter. "Down the stretch we did not do a very good job of taking care of the basketball and we committed some untimely turnovers. We were then forced to foul and CV made their free throws. Learning how to finish games is still a priority for us. We worked very hard getting back in the game and we gave ourselves a chance to win the game." Comments are closed.
