The Solanco JV baseball team has been road warriors. Unable to practice outside and then displaced from their own field by the varsity squad, the Mules have persevered, winning three games last week to improve to 4-1 on the season. On Friday, Solanco posted a walk-off win as the Mules were designated as the home team despite being forced to play at Elizabethtown. Solanco pushed across a run in the "home" half of the ninth to prevail 2-1 despite only getting one hit.
Winning pitcher Phil Probst and Dawson Gote each walked. As Probst was attempting to steal, the batter, Tony Osborne, bunted through a very high pitch. But the E-town catcher threw the ball into left field and Probst scored to end the game. Robert Beard started on the mound and was in total control, but his E-town opponent was just as impressive. Neither team recorded a hit in the first 3 1/2 innings. The Mules plated a run in the bottom of the fourth as Probst walked and came around to score on a double by Dawson Gote — the only hit for the mules in the game. With one out in the top of the sixth, E-town got their first hit, a bloop single to left. That runner came around to score and to tie the game at 1-1. Solanco scored a 7-6 triumph over Conestoga Valley last Wednesday. Dawson Gote got the start on the mound and error led to two unearned runs giving the Bucks a 2-0 lead. The Mules came back with four runs in the second when Dawson Gote doubled, Koby Nerys, Jarett McGuire and Mike Worthington singled, followed by a double from Noah McCardell. CV scored a run in the second as Derrick Lavin came on in relief with two outs and recorded the third out without throwing a pitch. Leading 4-3 the Mules added two runs in the fourth as Nerys was hit by a pitch, was sacrificed to second by McGuire, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a fielder’s choice. Worthington was later doubled home by Probst. The Bucks added a run in the fifth to make it 7-4. In the sixth, Lavin held off CV to earn a 7-6 victory. The Mules held on to top Ephrata Monday, April 1. Solanco took a 1-0 lead in the first as Worthington walked, stole second, and scored on a base hit by Colin Ewaka. In the bottom of the third, the Mules added four runs as McCardell and Matt Gote walked, Probst and Dawson Gote singled to drive in runs, and Probst later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0. Meanwhile, Kenny Walton, the winning pitcher, held the Mounts hitless until the sixth inning. A wild pitch on a strikeout would have been the third out, but Ephrata then recorded two hits and scored four runs with two outs to make it 5-4. Beard came in to record the last out and to get credit for a save. Comments are closed.
