by Bud Hart After losing starting goalkeeper Dylan Sheaffer, the Mules lost 6-3 to Donegal on Saturday, September 9. Backup goalie, sophomore, Jake Smolik, has tons of potential, but being thrust into starting job has not a been thing of beauty so far according to Miller. “His first start was Cedar Crest, 7-0,” wrote Miller. The coach was hoping the team would rebound against Donegal; it didn’t work as the Mules were down early 4-0 at half. “Frustrating because for most of the half we played them even,” added Miller. “Good news is we took 16 shots for the game and scored three goals in the second half. Evan Salisbury scored twice with assists from Tim Fetterman and Jack Boomsma. Tyler Williams scored as well with assist from Zach Roten. “
Tuesday night, September 12, at Ephrata, Miller tried to rally the team with an emotional speech. The subject was goalie Shaeffer who is out for the season. ”We hung his jersey from a rafter for all to see and the boys played the first 15 minutes toe to toe with an undefeated Ephrata team,” added Miller. But a 30-yard strike into the upper left corner left the Mules scratching their heads wondering what more they could do and eventually they were down 3-0 at half. “We started the second half the same as the first, threatening to get on board as Jack Boomsma shot stayed on the line and didn't go in. That would have made it 3-1. Instead we never recovered and lost to a superior team 7-0.” Playing Garden Spot at home on Thursday, September 14, felt like this was a game to win. Solanco outplayed the Spartans in the first half, but the score read 0-0 at the half. “We gave up goals late and ended up losing 2-0,” added Miller. “Offense is sputtering right now and I played 60 minutes of the game without my best player Evan Salisbury who is the quarterback of this team. “A groin issue for my four-year starter has been an issue and with an inexperienced team it is a dagger! With that being said, Jake Smolik had 10 saves and had a great game. Thomas Broomell who is my defensive stud and three-year starter is a true warrior. Defense had great game and I'm hoping we get some wins soon. This team has played hard and deserves it. Hoping offense wakes up and soon.” Comments are closed.
