Solanco's JV baseball team improved to 3-0 with a 9-7 victory over Berks Catholic last Wednesday. Freshman John Murray was the starting pitcher. Solanco took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as leadoff hitter Tim Fetterman was hit by a pitch, was sacrificed to second by Dawson Kreider, and scored on a base hit by Sam Buckwalter. The Saints scored three in the second without a hit. After a leadoff walk, there were consecutive miscues on a bunt and a ground ball leading to two runs and a third later scored on a ground out.
In the home half of the second, the Mules reclaimed the lead as Joey Gote, Gabe Horn and Zach Fritz singled to load the bases. Alex McDonald then laced a ball down the third baseline clearing the bases. McDonald scored on a sacrifice fly from Kreider to give Solanco a 5-3 lead. Berks Catholic came back with a run in the third, again without a hit, as the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch, stole two bases, and scored on a throwing error. The Mules added a run in the bottom of the inning when Gote walked with two outs and was driven home on a double from Gabe Horn. Murray hurled three innings and yielded four runs on one hit. Coleman Dow came on in the fourth inning. He gave up a leadoff single and that runner eventually scored on a passed ball to make the score 6-5 in favor of the Mules. Dow then hurled a scoreless fifth. In the bottom of the inning, Solanco added to their lead as Sam Buckwalter tripled and Murray followed with a double. After a walk to Jack Boomsma, Hunter Shaw singled to score Murray. McDonald then hit a dribbler down the third baseline that was foul but hooked back in to fair territory and led to an errant throw to first base allowing Boomsma to score to make it 9-5 Solanco. The insurance runs came in handy as the Saints were not finished. Buckwalter relieved in the sixth. After one out, there was a single followed by an error at second base. Buckwalter then recorded a strikeout for the second out. A walk loaded the bases. Another error in the infield allowed two runs to cut Solanco's lead to 9-7. With the bases reloaded, Horn came in to record the save with a strikeout and preserve the win. "While there were some throwing errors in this contest, the Mules overcame those mistakes with continued success at the plate, with executing bunts, with heads-up base running and timely pitching," coach John Girvin said.
