League meet vs. L-S, CV, Donegal, and McCaskey The Solanco boys and girls cross country teams both turned in a good performance in Lancaster County Park Tuesday, September 8. "Top to bottom a good day for Solanco cross country student-athletes," coach Craig Ausel said. "Both teams responded to last week's sluggishness at the home meet." The boys team defeated Lampeter-Strasburg 20-35, Donegal 19-39, Conestoga Valley 24-33, and lost to McCaskey 25-33. "We were very pleased with the boys' competitive nature," said Ausel. "Going up against a powerful McCaskey boys squad and a solid CV team the Mules responded very well." Noah Brady (17:48), Liam Hodgson (17:48), and Kyle Munro (18:00) were third, fourth, and fifth respectively with very good times on a difficult and slow course. "We have known that these three student-athletes could compete with the best talent in the L-L League and they proved it," said Ausel. Matthew Curran finished 13th in the field of 88 runners. "His time of 19:02 contributed greatly to our wins over CV, Donegal, and L-S," said Ausel. "Our top four boys did exactly what they needed to do to be competitive." Sophomore Alec Munro finished 26th overall in 20:30. "Alec ran well but was unable to overcome the eight McCaskey runners in front of him," said Ausel. "Alec will get stronger as the season moves forward." Patrick Workman (20:58) and Keith Carnrike (21:03) ran personal best times on this tricky course. "We are proud of their attempt to step up at a big meet," Ausel said. Sophomore Connor Neaves ran a strong second half of a race to finish in 21:11. He was followed by freshman Christian Stead (21:26), junior Dan Riddell (21:39), and freshman Ian Brown (21:48). "This group of Mules should all be running in the 19 minute range by the end of the season," said Ausel. Rounding out the Mules' strong performances with many personal best times were Brandon Smyth (23:47), Ben Dalrymple (24:37), Alex Castagna (24:55), Michael McFadden (25:01), Joey Segich (25:24), and Patrick Sweda (26:46). "All in all it was a very solid day for the Mule boys," said Ausel. The Solanco girls topped Lampeter-Strasburg 21-34, Donegal 24-32, Conestoga Valley 20-35, and McCaskey 26-32. Our ladies also had an outstanding day," said Ausel. "They really rose to the occasion securing four wins against some very good competition. Both the McCaskey and Donegal girls came into this competition undefeated." Sophomore Cortney Johnson ran away from the field with 800 meters to go, finishing in first with a time of 20:49. "Cortney ran a very smart race through the first two miles just sitting on the leader and finishing strong," said Ausel. Senior Natalie Crum finished third in 21:17. "Natalie was reliable as usual," said Ausel. "She has learned how to run with the pack through the first half of the race and use here experience to finish strong." Morgan Perry was fifth overall in 21:47 with a very strong second half of a race. "Morgan moved up five places in the last two miles to secure some valuable points," said Ausel. Ausel said Essi Glah-Fisher "demonstrated the fire and spunk that she has as a competitor" with a solid 21:57 to finish eighth. "Essi was determined to start strong today," the coach said. "By the end of the season, Essi will be able to back up this strong start with more endurance in the final mile. Essi’s solid finish allowed the Solanco girls to place four runners in the top eight. This would make the difference." Senior Carly Allport was 29th in 24:01. "Carly again was our warrior at the fifth position," said Ausel. "Her determination and willingness to fight secured our final points." Freshman Kaitlyn Borcky ran a personal best 24:59. "Kaitlyn continues to impress us with her determination and steady improvement," said Ausel. "Kaitlyn is proving that she has the talent to be a solid cross country runner." The remainder of the Mules: Denise Brenneman (27:23), Kaitlyn Ashley (27:35), Karly Burkhart (27:57), Autumn Boxlietner (28:27) and Brooke McCardell (30:08). "All in all we are very, very proud of both squads for their fight and determination to get the very most from their abilities and preparation," said Ausel. Comments are closed.
