It was an impressive week for the Solanco girls soccer team. The Mules recorded a win and played well in two losses. "Overall we had a pretty good week," said coach Ken Yoder. "We play some really quality teams in our schedule and it feels like these teams are starting to realize that especially at home, we can make it very tough on them. We are really starting to see some good things on the field. Coach Shannon Bender has been instrumental in helping develop these girls." Reigning section champion Manheim Central downed Solanco 4-1 Saturday morning.
Central took the lead in the 21st minute and added a goal early in the second half. Solanco freshman Grace Krieder scored in the 59th minute to close the gap to 2-1. "Grace played a significant role as a freshman in central midfield," said Yoder. "She is one of four freshmen that are contributing greatly to our team." Manheim Central answered right back minutes later with a third goal and added a fourth to close out the game. "The girls played excellent especially in the first half," Yoder said. Last Wednesday, the Mules upended Lebanon 4-2. Senior forward Rauna Curry-Saner gave Solanco the lead off an assist from her sister, freshman Reese Curry-Saner. Rauna Curry-Saner then assisted Tori Delp for the second goal of the game. Lebanon didn't go away quietly however, scoring early in the second half to make it 2-1. Delp answered right back with a beautiful shot to make it 3-1. "Tori had an excellent game," said Yoder. "She scored her first two varsity goals and played great. I think this will do a lot for her confidence going forward." After Lebanon trimmed their deficit to 3-2, Rauna Curry-Saner put the game away in the final minutes. "Rauna had a great game with two goals and assisting on Tori's first goal," Yoder said. "She has really stepped up over the past few games, and is providing the kind of senior leadership that we are looking for. This was a really good win for us. We were able to stay focused and close out a close game that we needed to win." On Monday, September 21, Ephrata edged the Mules 1-0. The Mounts scored the game's lone goal early in the first half. "This was a great contest for us," said Yoder. "The girls are starting to really get the new system we are playing and it felt good to be in a game right up to the final seconds against a very good team." ` Comments are closed.
