The Solanco baseball team won one of three games last week. The Mules lost to Elizabethtown and Ephrata sandwiched around a victory over Conestoga Valley. E-town topped Solanco 9-4 last Thursday. "We tried a couple guys on the mound," coach Tom Fish said. "We struggled a little early and a little late. I was happy with how we fought back in the middle." Down 6-0, the Mules tallied four times in the fifth keyed by three straight RBI hits. Joe Murray delivered an RBI double followed by an RBI single by Dawson Gote and RBI double off the bat of Taggart Hess. "We ran out of pitching and we ran out of gas," said Fish. "We'll get it figured out. We have a bunch of guys who can pitch.
“They're just not stretched out and don't have the experience of going through the order more than one time." Solanco continues to play well on defense led by shortstop Brady Thomas. "Brady has played an excellent shortstop," Fish said. "He's one of the best defensive shortstops in the county." The Mules bounced back from an early 3-0 deficit to down visiting Conestoga Valley 7-4 last Wednesday. Solanco chipped away before finally tying it at 4-4 on a two-out RBI hit by Gote in the fourth. "It felt good to get it tied," said Fish. The Mules went ahead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, all coming with two outs. Tony Rambo singled, stole second, and scored when Derek Lavin reached on an error. Thomas added an RBI double and Bailey Keys contributed an RBI single. Murray made the start for his first varsity outing. Fish said he was a little shaky early before recovering. Robert Beard came on in relief to hurl 3 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. "Robert was the story," Fish said. "He came on and got out of a jam and then pitched three pretty harmless innings." Solanco lost 3-2 to its chief rival Ephrata Monday, March 30. The Mules jumped on top 2-0 on a two-out, two-run single by Phil Probst in the first. "We had opportunities to tack runs on but just couldn't push anything across," said Fish. A controversial call cost Solanco a run in the third when a runner was ruled to have not tagged up at third on a fly ball. "I lost my composure a little and I think the team did too for about five minutes," said Fish. Ephrata scored three runs right after that and held on. The Mules had a runner thrown out at the plate on a grounder in the seventh. Then, a long fly ball by Bailey Keys was caught to end the game. "That was a tough one," said Fish. "I'm proud of the way they came back Wednesday. There isn't any other game like the night game at Ephrata and it can affect you in the next game." Solanco is 2-2 overall, 1-2 in league play. "It's a long season and we're not discouraged," said Fish. "There are going to be a lot of one-run games in our section." Comments are closed.
