A varsity football game between two county rivals will also collect items for food banks in both communities. This will be the fourth year the program, White Out Against Hunger, has operated in the Conestoga Valley School District. It will be the first year Solanco Neighborhood Ministries has joined the effort. "We're trying to raise the awareness of hunger in our communities," said Teresa Dolan, executive director of Solanco Neighborhood Ministries.
The donation of at least two non-perishable items will get $1 off the admission price to the game, to be played at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Pike, at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 8. The gate will open at 5:45 p.m. "We're asking people to bring canned or boxed items that don't contain liquids. We are also asking that no items in glass jars be donated," Dolan said. The food drive comes at a time when both food banks need items. "Generally, donations are lower than during the holidays and this is a neat way to raise awareness and get the kids involved," Dolan said. Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services has run the event at CV. That agency will split the donations with Solanco's group. "They have a scale and we will weigh the donations, with half going to CV and half to Solanco," Dolan said. While supplies last, donors will also receive a White Out Against Hunger t-shirt. The front of each shirt will also have the logos of both schools. The back of Solanco shirts will have information from local sponsors Paul Risk Associates and The Fireside Tavern. "Last year, they [CV] gave out about 700 t-shirts," Dolan said. At previous CV games, students wearing the shirts have created blocks of white in the stadium stands to show the community's willingness to fight hunger by supporting the food bank. "Next year, Solanco will host the game. Since this is our first year participating, we will be able to go there and see how they do it," she said. Comments are closed.
