The Solanco boys basketball team tallied the game's first 10 points and cruised to a 46-27 triumph over visiting Donegal Friday night, December 13.
The Mules (2-3) enter the week on a two-game winning streak. When Derek Jennings and his sister, Priscilla, were younger, the siblings would run from their home on Oak Bottom Road to their grandmother's house near The Buck with their mother, Teresa, trailing in the family van.
More than 25 years later, Derek and Priscilla followed in the family footsteps by joining their parents in an exclusive club. Derek Jennings and Priscilla Jennings Landis were each inducted into the Solanco Cross Country Hall of Fame during the program's end of season banquet. Solanco girls basketball coach Chad McDowell has heard the whispers and he has a message for anyone who thinks the Mules recent run of success has come to an end.
The Solanco wrestling team is expecting to build off last year's solid campaign with a more impressive showing this season.
Last year, the Mules were 10-4 in dual meets and qualified for the district team tournament. No Solanco wrestlers advanced to the PIAA tournament but Dominic Flatt captured the Lancaster-Lebanon League title at 106 pounds. Solanco's boys basketball team (3-19 last season) is determined to establish a new identity under first-year head coach David Long.
"The big thing is we want to change our identity from what we've been," said Long, who took over from his brother, Scott Long, now the school's principal. "We want to have an identity that shows who we are and what we do. The idea is to be the toughest team on the court every game. I think we can be competitive with everyone we play." The Solanco girls soccer team's historic season concluded a win away from reaching the once-unthinkable goal of advancing to the state tournament.
Conrad Weiser nipped the Mules 1-0 in a District III third place game on a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon at Tulpehocken High. "It's heartbreaking to just have it come to an end but we fought so hard and we made history as it is," freshman back Arianna Sieberlich said. The Solanco football team suffered an excruciating 42-35 loss to undefeated Shippensburg in the first round of the district playoffs at Veterans Memorial Park Friday night, November 1.
The Solanco girls soccer team's dream of winning a district title is over. So is the Mules' 11-game unbeaten streak.
But Solanco still has a lot on the line. The Mules (14-5-2) can claim a berth in the PIAA Tournament with a win at Conrad Weiser Saturday at noon in the district consolation game. The Solanco football team lost its regular season finale but still managed to make the playoffs by virtue of its solid resumé.
The Mules (5-5) earned the 14th and final seed in the district tournament. Solanco will travel to third-seeded Shippensburg Friday night at 7. Manheim Central, seeded fourth in the district tournament, defeated the host Mules 49-20 Friday night, October 25. Solanco's Graci Unger considered neither the ramifications nor the pressure when she stepped to the penalty kick spot with a chance to send her team to the district semifinals.
