The Solanco baseball team worked its way back into the section race by winning two of three games last week. The Mules downed Lampeter-Strasburg and Garden Spot before falling to Penn Manor Friday. The Comets downed Solanco 10-3. "We kind of ran out of gas a little bit," coach Tom Fish said. "We were happy to win the first two games of the week and get back in the section. Fridays are a little bit of a challenge for us right now." The Mules, who have stressed putting the ball in play, only struck out twice but managed just two hits. "We're going to have to make some adjustments and try to drive the ball a little bit more," Fish said. Trailing 5-3, Solanco was within striking distance in the fifth and one out away from getting out of the inning before Penn Manor got a two-run single.
The Mules scored all three of their runs in the fourth. Dawson Gote and Tag Hess each delivered an RBI single. Garden Spot (5-1) is atop the section standings followed by Ephrata (4-2) and Solanco (3-3). The Mules handed the Spartans their first league loss last Wednesday, 6-2. Starting pitcher Joe Murray kept the Mules in the game before Robert Beard turned in another outstanding effort in relief. Beard did not allow a run in 3 2/3 innings and has thrown 8 2/3 shutout innings this season. "Robert really has done a great job," said Fish. Solanco scored four runs in the fifth to snap a 2-2 tie. Tony Rambo got things started with a single and scored when Derek Lavin reached on an error. Brady Thomas came through with an RBI double and Bailey Keys and Murray followed with RBI singles. The Mules upended Lampeter-Strasburg 10-3 Monday April 6. "This is my fifth year here and by far this is the best game we've played from front to back," said Fish. "We played a team that is good and going to be really good and we never let them in the game." Hess jumped on a first pitch fastball to belt a grand slam with two out in the first to give Solanco the lead for good. The four-run cushion was enough for Mules' starter Kenny Walton. Walton finished with a career-high nine strikeouts. "He is really turning into an ace for us," Fish said. "We're confident and excited every time he takes the mound." Hess added a two-run single in the fourth to make the score 8-0. Thomas and Mike Worthington each contributed an RBI single. "It was a total team effort," said Fish. "Everybody did what they were aqsked. Nobody gave up an at bat." Beard got the final two outs. Solanco has played its neighbors in the season-opener in past years but L-S and Garden Spot both moved up to Section Two this year. Comments are closed.
