The Solanco softball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday. Host Penn Manor downed the Mules 3-2. "They have a quality pitcher and she makes a big difference," Solanco coach Brett Miller said. Comets freshman Brittany Hook limited the Mules to five hits, three of which came in the seventh inning. Down 3-0, Solanco rallied in its final at bat. Makayla Pluck singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Kalyn Burger came through with an RBI hit and moved up to second on the throw to the plate. Sydney Sturgill then singled to plate courtesy runner Aubrey Doss and Sturgill advance to second on the throw home.
Hook retired the next batter to end the game. "We couldn't quite get the last hit we needed to tie the game," Miller said. "We were down 3-0 to a quality pitcher and the girls showed a lot of character and heart to keep battling." The Mules' pitcher Burger allowed just four hits. "Kalyn pitched well enough to get a win," Miller said. Solanco clubbed Garden Spot 12-3 last Wednesday. The Mules scored five runs in the first inning. Abby Heidelbaugh led off with a double and Madi Sheaffer walked. Both runners scored on a double by Maribeth Ault. Solanco added three more runs with help from three Spartans' errors. In the second, Heidelbaugh walked and Sheaffer tripled to center. The Mules broke the game open in the fourth. Once again, Heidelbaugh got things started by reaching on an error. Sheaffer beat out a bunt for a hit and Pluck singled to load the bases. Borcky delivered an RBI single and Burger followed with a two-run double. Sturgill singled home the courtesy runner Doss. After an Allison McDowell single, Leila Redmond singled home Sturgill. Burger allowed 10 hits and struck out six. She did not issue a walk. "Kalyn made the pitches she needed to make and the defense made the plays they needed to," said Miller. The Mules routed Lebanon 21-6 Monday, April 7. There was a total of 33 walks in the game, 24 of them by Lebanon. "We got the end result we were looking for," said Miller. Comments are closed.
