Jerry L. Kunkle of North East died Monday, December 9, 2013 at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia. He was 72. Born in Stewartstown, Pa., on November 12, 1941, he was the son of the late William Herbert and the late Eleanor Mae Virginia (Kefauver) Kunkle. He received a BS Degree from Millersville State College in 1964 and his Master’s Degree in Education from Western Maryland College in 1968. In 1979, he received a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Education from Johns Hopkins University, and also earned an Advanced Professional Certificate. Mr. Kunkle retired after 33 years of service from the Cecil County Board of Education. He began his teaching career as a teacher at the Elkton Elementary School. Over the years he also taught at Rising Sun and Holly Hall Elementary Schools before becoming Principal of Leeds Elementary, Principal of North East Elementary, Supervisor of Elementary Schools, and the Assistant Superintendent in Administration. He held this position until he was appointed Superintendent of Schools for a four year term in 1988 by the Board of Education. Mr. Kunkle was appointed to a second four year term in 1992 and retired from this position.
He was very active in the community, serving on boards and committees with Cecil County YMCA Board of Directors, Greater Elkton Jaycees, DelMarVA Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Board of Directors of Union Hospital, North East High School Indian Boosters Club, Cecil County Health Planning Council and the North East Little League. He was a member of the Elkton Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and a Trustee. He enjoyed camping and spending time at Leisure Point, wood carving, traveling, golfing, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. He always made time for his family and friends. Spending time with them was his greatest joy. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Kunkle of North East; and his children, Garth Kunkle and wife Christina of Harrisonburg, Va. and Amy Sexton of North East; four grandchildren, Benjamin, Danika Grace, Mackenzie and Pierson; sisters Linda Miller and husband Dean of Stewartstown, Sara Hicks and husband Chuck of Little Rock, Arkansas, Judy Garcia and husband Raul of Pasadena, Texas, his sister-in-law, Nancy Kunkle of Red Lion, Pa., and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Kunkle; a niece, Jennifer Kunkle; and a nephew, Michael Kunkle. Visitation will be held on Friday December 13, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at Elkton Presbyterian Church. Memorial services, conducted by Rev. Laurie Loveless, will be held Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Elkton Presbyterian Church, 209 East Main Street, Elkton, MD. The family will receive guest beginning one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Memorial Garden at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Elkton Presbyterian Church.
