Jerrell Lloyd Sanders of North East died February 13, 2014 at Union Hospital in Elkton. He was 89. He was born November 26, 1924 in Hopewell, Va. to the late Daisy and Lloyd Sanders of Colonial Heights, Va. He lived in Petersburg, Va. with his family until 1971. Mr. Sanders attended The University of Virginia, Caltech, Virginia Commonwealth University and obtained a Master’s from the University of Richmond. He was a 41-year employee of the Defense Department and retired as a Lieutenant Commander from the Naval Reserves. He was actively involved in community organizations. He was a member of the Jaycees and Lions Club in Petersburg; the Rotary Club of Elkton; and served on the Board of Social Services of Cecil County.
During retirement, he enjoyed local politics, reading, card playing and woodworking. In 2010, he moved to Oxford, Pa., residing at Ware Presbyterian Retirement Village. He is survived by a daughter, Riki Sanders Stone and husband Dennis of Richmond, Va., son: J. Lloyd Sanders, Jr. and wife Virginia of Rising Sun; four grandchildren. Sunni Neal Ystrǿm of Copenhagen, Denmark, Katherine Stone Kapinos and Robert Keith Stone both of Richmond, Va., Christopher Lloyd Stone of Fort Bragg, N.C.; five great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Edwin C. Granley of Springfield, Va.; and niece, Sara Granley Becker and family of McLean, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lila Kinsey Sanders; and a sister, Norma Sanders Granley of Alexandria, Va. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Crouch Funeral Home, P.A., 127 South Main Street, North East, from 1-2 p.m. with a memorial service immediately after.
