James Given of Elkton, and Jefferson, N.C. died Saturday, February 15, 2014. He was 76. Born in Hendersonville on July 27, 1937, he was the son of the late Walter C. Given, Sr. and Margarite (McNabb) Given. He served in the Army Reserves and the Maryland National Guard.
Mr. Given was a mechanic employed by the Maryland State Police in North East. He was a member of Charlestown Missionary Baptist Church and Bristol Baptist Church; a MSP Alumna; and a member of the Eastern Shore Thresherman Association. He also enjoyed wood working, restoring antique cars, working in the outdoors, sledding, and hiking trails on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Survivors include his wife, Jean Given; daughter, Donna Renee Sprout (John) and son, James Robert Given (Christy) all of Elkton; sister: Anna Mae Heath of Melbourne, Fla.; and two brothers: John R. Given of Darlington and Walter C. Given Jr. of Elkton. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kristi Lyn, Kaitlyn Nicole, Jacob Robert, Heather Renee, John Tyler, Destiny Anne, and Faith Rose. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry C., Thomas N., and Wesley Given; and three sisters, Mary Castlelow, Ruth Steele and Pearl (Dolly) Tichner. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Crouch Funeral Home, P.A., 127 South Main Street, North East. A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Charlestown Missionary Baptist Church 1168 West Old Philadelphia Road, Charlestown, where the family will receive guests beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow services in Union Cemetery, Elkton.
