George W. Barnard, Jr. died at his home April 7, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was 93. He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, to Ethel and George W. Barnard, Sr., on Friday the 13th of January, 1922. He graduated from Allegany High School (Cumberland) and attended the University of Maryland until he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1943, retiring as a Captain in 1946. He began his career with AT&T Long Lines in 1946 until he retired in 1982. He worked in public relations, specializing in the Caribbean and European laying of the underwater cable on the Cable Ship Long Lines, represented AT&T in the New York City Jobs Program, and retired as Director of Safety Operations.
Mr. Barnard and his wife, Audrey, resided in Hances Point until they moved to Ware Presbyterian Village in 2004. He loved his church of St. Mary Anne’s in North East, where he served as Senior Warden for several years and also directed tours of the church and grounds. He was a member of the North East River Yacht Club, 1987 Commodore and volunteer manager for 10 years. He is survived by Audrey Clerihue Barnard, his wife of 73 years, and his daughter Pamela Barnard Childers and son-in-law Malcolm Graeme Childers of Palisade, Colorado.
