George E. McCreary of Calvert died at home Friday, July 24, 2015. He was 91. Born in Avon Grove, Pa., on August 14, 1923, he was the son of the late George C. and the late Sarah Jane (Pennock) McCreary. Mr. McCreary served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant, working as an aircraft mechanic for B17 and B24 bombers. After he returned from service, he worked hard to establish the family farm. He also worked at Chrysler Corp., retiring after many years of service. Mr. McCreary was a member of North East Church of God.
He enjoyed farming, mowing grass, gardening, flowers, bluegrass music and watching his bird boxes. He is survived by four children, George E. McCreary, Jr. (The late, Diane) of North East, Joanna Fink (Bruce) of Calvert, Deborah MacCauley (Donald) of The Villages, Fla. and David McCreary (Doris) of Calvert; eight grandchildren, Eric McCreary, Lindsay Bomba, Ryan Benedetto, Rachele Benedetto, Travis Benedetto, Allison Sites, Justin McCreary and Deanna Benedetto; and three great grandchildren: Jaxon Sites, Vivienne Bomba and the late, Kennedy Sites. He was the husband of the late Beatrice D. McCreary who died on Feb. 22, 2007. Visitation for family and friends will be held Saturday, August 1, from 10-11 a.m. at North East Church of God, 302 East Thomas Ave., North East, with funeral services, conducted by Rev. Ralph Massie, beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow services in Rose Bank Cemetery, Calvert.
