Eugene J. Boyd died Tuesday, June 3, 2014. He was 91. Born in Perryville on April 29, 1923, he was the son of the late Walter and Lily Benjamin Boyd. A 1941 graduate and senior class president of Jacob Tome School, he was an Eagle and Sea Scout, and enjoyed a lifelong participation in scouting, including being the first den chief in Cecil County and serving as a committee chairman and merit badge counselor in Perryville scout troops for many years. A baseball enthusiast, he followed the Orioles from their inception, was one of the founders of Perryville Little League, serving as president and other offices for over 20 years. He served in World War II, graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy with an engineering degree and served on a ship as a second mate in the Army Transportation Corps until after the end of the war. He worked at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in various engineering and instructional capacities until his retirement in 1971.
In addition, he owned and operated the Twin Oaks drive-in in Perryville on Route 40 from 1955 to 1979, a favorite spot for families and teens in town. He also sold real estate for A.J. Fair Realty, then acquired his own real estate brokerage, Century 21 Atlantic Agency in Havre de Grace; was a member of the Harford and Cecil Counties Boards of Realtors, member of the American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, and a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Perryville. Finally retiring, he enjoyed his many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, along with following the Orioles and doing projects around the house. He was known as a gregarious, kind, empathetic, and intelligent man, an avid story teller, with nary an unkind word about anyone. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Genevieve Lounsbury Boyd; sister Betty Valentini of East Lyme, Conn.; five sons, Kenneth Boyd (Sandy) of Ellicott City, Brian Boyd (Janice) of Abingdon, Kevin Boyd (Debbie) of Perryville, Stephen Boyd (Suong) of Berlin, and Ronald Boyd (Corinne); 12 grandchildren and spouses, and five great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Aleta Marie, and five sisters and one brother. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, June 7, 2014, 1 p.m., at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Perryville. Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, June 6, 2014, 5-8 p.m., at the Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville. Burial will be in St. Mark’s Cemetery, Perryville.
