Charles G. Viars of Fairfax, Va. died Sunday, August 31, 2014. He was 79. He was born on May 4, 1935 in Oak Hill, W.Va. After serving his country in the Air Force, he attended Zion Bible College, which led him to preach at Aspley Assembly of God church in Nottingham, England before becoming a pastor at an Assembly of God church in Dundee, Scotland. Upon returning to the United States, he worked for the Department of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Naval Electronics Security Command and retired at age 70 from the National Security Group with 42 years of federal service. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 139, serving as the Athletic Director, Chaplain and most recently, the Post Commander.
He also coached youth basketball and baseball for over 30 years. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joy Viars; three daughters, Joy Bullock, Julia Field and Michele Cave; six grandchildren, Tara Segura, Luke Bullock, Leah Field, Hannah Field, Ethan Cave and Noah Cave; and three sons-in-law, John Bullock, Michael Field and Steven Cave. Friends will be received at Murphy’s Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, Va. on Thursday, September 11 from 6-9 p.m. with the American Legion holding a ceremony at 7 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at Quantico Base Chapel, Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Va. on Friday, September 12 at 11:30 a.m. with burial to follow at Quantico National Cemetery. There will be a reception hosted by American Legion Post 177, 3939 Oak Street, Fairfax, Va. at approximately 3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Charities, PO Box 361626, Indianapolis IN 46236 or to the North East High School Scholarship Foundation, P.O.
