Bernice Montgomery, 89, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 5, 2017. Born on November 21, 1927 in Lewisville, PA, she was the daughter of the late William K. and Laura I. (Stoops) Simmons. Bernice was a graduate of Oxford High School in Oxford, PA. She then entered the workforce and throughout her life worked for Thiokol, Montgomery Farm Equipment, and Ag Industrial. Bernice was a member of Rosebank United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included traveling, bowling, playing Bingo, and going to the casino. Bernice’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends. Bernice is survived by two daughters: Elaine Gibney and Wanda McMillan (Tom), both of Rising Sun, MD; three grandchildren: Tom Gibney (Wendy) of Colora, MD, Billy McMillan (Tina) of North East, MD, and Jeff McMillan (Susan) of North East, MD; nine great-grandchildren: Dylan and Abby Gibney, Will, Justis, Wyatt, Madison, Clayton, Jace, and Elliott McMillan; great great-grandson, Kolton Westerfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Bernice is preceded in death by her grandson, Jimmy Underwood; sister, Mary Simmons Johnson; and two brothers: William F. and Lawrence Simmons. A celebration of Bernice’s life will be held at 11AM on Friday, January 20, 2017 at Rosebank United Methodist Church, 1743 Telegraph Road, Rising Sun, MD 21911, with a visitation beginning at 10AM. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to “Rosebank United Methodist Church” and sent in care of R.T.
