Barbara S. Howell of Cambridge, formerly of North East, died Wednesday, September 17, 2014. She was 79. Mrs. Howell was born on March 6, 1935, in a home on the duPont property, now Fair Hill, to Harold and Elsie Cockerham Strahorn. Mrs. Howell graduated from Elkton High School and attended Towson Teachers College. She then met the love of her life, Edward Howell, and on September 10, 2014, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Howell devoted her entire life to her family, her church and her friends. Never were her hands still; always knitting, crocheting, quilting and cooking – all for others. She lived her entire life as a Christian, spreading the word of God through her actions and examples. We will all remember her beautiful smile, joyful and contagious. Mrs. Howell was a member of Rock Presbyterian Church, North East United Methodist Church, Hart’s United Methodist Church, and Beckwith United Methodist Church, where she was involved in many aspects of each church she attended. She was a volunteer with the Literacy Project, Habitat for Humanity, and Northern Chesapeake Hospice Foundation, and knitted hundreds of sweaters for newborn babies. After raising their family, Barbara and Eddie left Cecil County and retired to their dream home on the Little Choptank River in Cambridge. They loved packing up their camper and dog and traveling around the country. In 2007, they drove to Alaska, 2008 they crisscrossed the United States and more recently they visited Nags Head, N.C. She loved vacationing in Nags Head and all beach activities. She had so many hobbies and interests, all of which she did well, in the name of God. She was an awesome mother who made her children feel loved and secure. Her grandchildren loved their times with Mom Mom, which usually turned into memorable adventures. In addition to her husband, survivors include her daughters, Martha Harris and husband, Ron, Elkton, and Norma Howell and fiancé, Bill Pfordt, Cambridge; sons, Daniel Howell, North East, and Roger Howell and wife, Sharan, Elkton; grandchildren, Christopher Howell, Angela Wengen and husband, Mark, Joseph Harris and fiancée, Andrea Bissell, Lawrence Johnson, Jamie Hudson and husband, Mark, Thomas Howell, Harrison Howell and Taylor Howell; great-granddaughter, Nellie Hudson; daughter-in-law, Joanna Howell, Perryville; and sister-in-law, Hazel Strahorn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, David, and her brother, Stan. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton St., Elkton, MD 21921. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m., Friday evening, September 19, at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service in Cherry Hill Methodist Cemetery, Cherry Hill. Flowers are welcome.
