David Meredith McDowell died August 11, 2018. He was 89. He was born in Calvert on April 21, 1929, to Harry Clayton and Helen England McDowell. Mr. McDowell graduated from Calvert Agricultural High School in 1946 as valedictorian and with honors from Houghton College, Houghton, N.Y. in 1950. While attending Houghton College, he met the love of his life, Lois Ruth Clingen. Mr. McDowell was the second-generation owner and operator of McDowell Plumbing & Heating. Except for his military service during the Korean War period, he worked in the business all his adult life. He truly loved the work that he did and was always grateful for the opportunity to provide service to his friends and neighbors in Cecil County. His hard work and honesty were yet another testament to the fact that he served his Lord in all that he did. Mr. McDowell possessed a sincere faith and love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His life was a testimony to his faith. He was a devoted and loving husband and father. He was a member of Grace Bible Chapel and served at his church as he was able all of his life. He led monthly services for 40 years at the Calvert Manor Healthcare Center, and he was grateful to have had the privilege of going on five mission trips with Lois in the later years of his life.
David and Lois were married on September 9, 1950, and shared almost 68 years of marriage. In addition to his beloved wife, David is survived by his six children; Sharon (Bronson) Hokuf, Stephen (Karen) McDowell, Martin (Sandra) McDowell, Ruth McDowell, Deborah (Craig) Thomas, and Jonathan (Kelly) McDowell. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and two brothers, Dr. Donald E. McDowell of Morgantown, W.Va., and H. Clay McDowell of Rising Sun. A memorial service will be held at Grace Bible Chapel located on Biggs Highway in Rising Sun, on Saturday, August 25 at 11 a.m. There will be no visitation. A luncheon will be served immediately after the service and the family wishes to invite everyone to stay and join them for that meal.
