Steven Edward Leonard, Sr. of North East died at home Saturday, May 3, 2014. He was 63. Born in Chester, Pa., on April 11, 1951, he was the son of the late Ralph E. and the late Jane (Spears) Leonard. He served in the Marines. Mr. Leonard retired from W. L. Gore due to disability. He was a member of VFW Post 6027, North East, and a member of the DAV. Kathleen Elizabeth "Betty" Diggs, of North East, died on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family. She was 94.
She was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on December 16, 1919, daughter of the late James Stanley and Dorothy Prescott Eales. Mrs. Diggs was an active member of St. Mary Anne's Episcopal Church where she directed the Altar Guild for many years. Her love for her Lord was evident in all that she did. She loved getting outdoors and enjoyed golfing, gardening and sailing. After retirement, she and her husband Bob lived aboard their sailboat traveling down to Florida and the Bahamas during the winter. She was an excellent cook and loved having people over for a meal. She was also a great quilter. Joseph Lyndhurst "Lofty" Lofthouse died April 28, 2014, at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home after a brief illness. He was 94. Mr. Lofthouse was born in Perryville on April 28, 1914, son of the late Joseph H. and Etta Lofthouse of Elkton. Except for 21 years of active military service, he lived his entire life in Cecil County. Mr. Lofthouse was truly one of the “Greatest Generation” and fought bravely during World War II. He entered into military service in October of 1939 with Co. E. 118th Infantry, 29th Division. In the Spring of 1942, he became a qualified parachutist and was assigned to the 502nd Parachute Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. He participated in two parachute invasions (D-Day on June 6, 1944 and Holland on September 17, 1944) and fought in four major infantry operations, including Normandy, Holland, Ardennes and Central Europe. |
