Bernice Montgomery, 89, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 5, 2017. Born on November 21, 1927 in Lewisville, PA, she was the daughter of the late William K. and Laura I. (Stoops) Simmons. Bernice was a graduate of Oxford High School in Oxford, PA. She then entered the workforce and throughout her life worked for Thiokol, Montgomery Farm Equipment, and Ag Industrial. Bernice was a member of Rosebank United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included traveling, bowling, playing Bingo, and going to the casino. Bernice’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends. Esther A. Hokuf, 86, of North East, MD, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 in Rising Sun, MD. Born in North East, MD on May 23, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Pearl E. (Gray) Puschell. Esther was a lifelong resident of Cecil County, Maryland. She graduated with the Class of 1947 from North East High School. She attended Delaware Hospital School of Nursing from 1948 until 1951 where she obtained her degree as a Registered Nurse and began working with Delaware Hospital. In 1951 she married Jerry Albert Hokuf. She worked for Dr. Jay Barnhart from 1963 to 1966 and the Cecil County Health Department from 1966 to 1991. She attended Cecil College from 1972 until 1974 where she received her public health certification degree. In 1991 she retired after 25 years of service with the Cecil County Health Department, 15 years of which she served as Clinic Supervisor. After retirement she became a volunteer and nurse with the Cecil County Pregnancy Center where she served from 1992 to 2003. Esther trusted Jesus Christ as her savior when she was 16 years old; she was a member of the First Baptist Church of North East for most of her adult life. She enjoyed serving there and was active in the “Women on Mission” and “Sunbeams” ministries; she taught Sunday school for over 40 years. She read through the Bible every year for much of her life. She enjoyed any outdoor activities: gardening, walking, and swimming; spending time with her grandchildren whom she loved dearly was important to her. Juanita Ann Goodwin, 71 of Rising Sun, MD, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017 at home.
Born in Elkton, MD, on January 26, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Porter Bennett and Catherine (Alexander) Goff. Juanita retired from Aberdeen Proving Ground where she worked as a Data Specialist. Many years ago, she umpired girls’ softball games. Melvin “Moke” Elwood Boyd, 93 years, of Perryville, MD, passed away Friday, December 30, 2016 at his residence. Born September 29, 1923 in Perryville, MD, he was the son of the late William Harmer and Evelyn Elizabeth White Boyd.
Moke was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of Perryville, MD, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and member of the Susquehanna American Legion Post No. 135 of Perryville, MD. He was formerly employed by the Philadelphia Electric Company. Moke is survived by his daughter, Karen A. Jones of Perryville, MD; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; brothers, James Boyd, Sr., and Arthur (Micky) Boyd. Eileen E. Boyd, 94 years, of Perryville, MD, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at her residence. Born September 27, 1922 in Cecil County she was the daughter of the late Harold and Edith Smeltzer Wettig.
Eileen was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of Perryville, MD. She is survived by her husband, Melvin Elwood Boyd of Perryville, MD; daughter, Karen A. Jones of Perryville, MD; three grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Eileen was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia L. Foster, and sister, Doris Weaver. William August Severn, 74 years, of Perryville, MD, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2016 in Union Hospital of Cecil County, Elkton, MD. Born October 17, 1942 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Albert Frederick, Sr., and Barbara Cecelia McCluskey Severn.
Mr. Severn was a member of Good Shepherd Parish and attended Good Shepherd Catholic Church of Perryville, MD. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving on the USS Beale 471 Destroyer. Mr. Severn was most recently employed as a Chemical Operator by Noramco, Johnson & Johnson of Wilmington, DE. In addition, he had previously been employed as a Lab Technician by the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, MD, Occidental Chemical of Perryville, MD, Firestone Plastics of Perryville, MD, American Cyanamid of Havre de Grace, MD. |
