It was a big day for Cecil County teams at the Maryland Track and Trail cross country meet at Fair Hill Saturday.
Rising Sun's girls and Bohemia Manor's boys both captured a team title. Sometimes, it's not how you start that's crucial.
Perryville's football team demonstrated it's occasionally how you finish that matters most. The Panthers (2-0) clawed out of an early 13-point hole en route to a 21-19 triumph over Largo Friday night in a game played at Rising Sun High School. Ivan Herrera is still using his feet to make an impact on the athletic fields.
So far, he's getting more kicks on the soccer pitch than he did on the gridiron. Herrera's first-half goal helped the Rising Sun boys soccer team edge Elkton 2-1 last Thursday night at Calvert Regional Park. Amanda Haraldsson doesn't remember how many goals she scored last year other than to say "not many."
Last Thursday, Haraldsson had a game she won't soon forget. The junior forward tallied three times to propel the Rising Sun field hockey team to a 5-1 triumph over Perryville at Calvert Regional Park. Elkton's Dah'mear Triplett hauls in a 69-yard touchdown pass during the third quarter of Elkton's 35-20 win over visiting Bohemia Manor Friday night. Elks build early lead on way to keeping sledgehammer Elkton retained possession of the Route 213 Sledgehammer with a 35-20 triumph over visiting Bohemia Manor Friday night in the season opener. Last year's Class 2A finalists jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never trailed. See photo gallery on next page
"Heart."
It's a word frequently used in sports to describe the tenacity an athlete or team demonstrates in the face of adversity. Although she's had five surgeries on her's, there can be no questioning Logan Ewing's heart. Perryville coach Dave Ruark called it "a fairytale ending".
In a game which featured more twists and turns than Principio Road, the Panthers outlasted Boonsboro 10-9 in nine innings Saturday in College Park to capture the school's first MPSSAA Class 1A softball state title and complete an undefeated season. The Perryville girls are in first place after the first ay of the state track and field meet at Morgan State.
Perryville's softball team advanced to the state final with a 15-0 triumph over Pikesville in five innings Wednesday afternoon at Bachman Sports Complex in Glen Burnie.
The Perryville girls clinched their fifth straight region track and field title.
The Panthers racked up a whopping 235.5 points to easily outdistance second place Patterson Mill (115). |
