Ivan Herrera is still using his feet to make an impact on the athletic fields. So far, he's getting more kicks on the soccer pitch than he did on the gridiron. Herrera's first-half goal helped the Rising Sun boys soccer team edge Elkton 2-1 last Thursday night at Calvert Regional Park. "They were setting me up nice," Herrera said of his teammates. "There were great passes, setting me up. Through balls and everything. We were getting past the defense."
The junior striker spent last fall as the kicker on the football team so he wasn't part of the Tigers' soccer team which lost twice to the Golden Elks. "This is my first year playing soccer with them and they said they've been losing to Elkton the last couple years so this was a pretty big win," said Herrera. Herrera elected to give soccer a try this fall. "I was just looking at the football team and it wasn't really going to work out for me," he said. "I wasn't going to get a lot of playing time and I just knew soccer was going to be fun. I was going to have a lot more happiness playing soccer. It was a great feeling scoring that goal." The Tigers took a 2-0 lead when Jackson Sopa converted a penalty kick with 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Elkton got on the board two minutes later as Jacob Bosler knocked one in from the spot. Rising Sun, which controlled play for most of the game, did not allow Elkton any golden opportunities over the final 11 minutes. "It's always tough because you can get a through ball that can change the outcome of the game," Rising Sun coach Ken Ulrich said. "You can get a penalty that can change the outcome of the game. I never worried about us having possession. We had possession, we felt, most of the game." The Tigers were able to rebound from a season-opening loss to North Harford. "It helps that it's Elkton," Ulrich said. "They played us twice last year, We felt that we outplayed them but we didn't outscore them. That was a big thing for us this year, to prove that and come back. They're tough…Elkton played tough but I think we really wanted this game. Obviously we played hard. We had good possession. We had good intensity. Everything came together for us." Comments are closed.
