Just because Rising Sun High School's annual Powderpuff game ended in a 0-0 tie doesn't mean there weren't any winners.
The Tuesday, November 20, event held in the stadium generated funds for the school's Student Council, advisor Samantha Heil said. The Student Council uses the money to adopt a family for Christmas and buy breakfast for donors at the annual blood drive held in the spring. "Those are the big things," Heil said. Chris Johnson has enjoyed a great deal of success in his Perryville football coaching career.
He guided the Panthers to the 2011 state title game and won another region championship the following season. But Johnson has never had more genuine affection for a team than he has for the 2018 squad. The Rising Sun football team closed out a turnaround season with a 28-7 triumph over host North East in the rain Friday night.
Rising Sun's longshot playoff hopes had been dashed the night before when Parkside walloped Washington, but the focused Tigers still took care of business. Susquehanna Division champion Rising Sun finishes the season 7-3 after winning just one game last year. "It's been a fantastic season," Rising Sun coach Clem Vaughan said. "I couldn't be more proud of these guys, the way they worked in the offseason and came after it. They were receptive to change and came in after it." Rising Sun football players didn't view their 13-12 triumph over Harford Tech as a major upset.
Perhaps that's why the host Tigers managed to pull it off on a soggy Saturday afternoon. Although many outsiders expected the previously undefeated Cobras would prevail, one group in particular thought otherwise. "It's amazing," Rising Sun senior Dustin Flowers said. "You couldn't have written it up any better than this. No one expected us to do this. Not one person. We just believed in ourselves and we came out here and did it." Bohemia Manor boosted its playoff aspirations with a 19-14 victory over host North East Friday night.
Four Noah Boyd scores and 47 points ago, the Rising Sun football team trounced visiting Joppatowne 47-6 on Homecoming Friday night.
In a postgame meeting with his team, Elkton football coach Matt Feeney called Friday night's victory a "season-saver."
The Elks (4-2) snapped a two-game losing streak and bolstered their playoff aspirations with a dominant demonstration during a 50-30 drubbing of previously undefeated host Havre de Grace Friday night at Harris Stadium. Perryville football coach Chris Johnson succinctly summed up his team's 51-36 loss to visiting Rising Sun Friday night when he said, "nobody was stopping anybody."
A flag fest featured a frenzied finish.
Dustin Flowers provided two big plays in the frenetic final four minutes to spark Rising Sun to a 34-27 triumph over visiting Bohemia Manor in a penalty-plagued contest Friday night. The Susquehanna Bowl is staying on the west side of the river.
Havre de Grace claimed its fourth straight victory in the rivalry with Perryville by downing the Panthers 45-15 Thursday night at Harris Stadium. The host Warriors capitalized on Perryville's inexperience and lack of depth to dominate all three facets of the game and score 45 unanswered points following the Panthers' strong start. |
