Four Noah Boyd scores and 47 points ago, the Rising Sun football team trounced visiting Joppatowne 47-6 on Homecoming Friday night. Boyd scored four touchdowns in a game for the third time this season and finished with 181 yards on 13 carries to power the potent Tiger offense. He has 18 touchdowns on the year.
Boyd once again credited his blockers – Joey Husfelt, Nate Husfelt, Sean McDaniel, Devlin Foster, Dakota Douglas, and John Falker. "They're great," he said. Joppatowme came in with a reputation for a solid defense after defeating North East and losing 7-0 to Perryville earlier in the season. "We just executed that much better," said Boyd. "They have a great defense. Seven-nothing [against] Perryville [the previous week] and Perryville has a great offense so to be able to hold them to seven is very impressive. Credit to them. I just think it was a product of us executing very well and that was the key to it." Rising Sun coach Clem Vaughan had respect for the Mariners' defense, but saw a weakness he was confident his squad could exploit. "Guard trap has been pretty good for us and I thought we could get it," said Vaughan. "We worked on it all week long. The kids executed and got it done." The bigger, stronger Tigers were able to wear down a Joppatowne team with a small roster. "I thought we just caught them in a couple spots and then when you only have 19 guys, it's hard to keep it churning," Vaughan said. "We got a lead on them and we kind of made them quit, submitted them." Rising Sun's defense also dominated. Joppatowne got as far as the Tiger 14 on the first drive of the game before inside linebacker Ross Lunsford made back-to-back big plays to stymie the Mariners. "He had a fantastic night," Vaughan said of Lunsford. "We simplified everything for him and said, 'Go get it, Ross', and he did it." The Tigers took the lead on a 27-yard scamper by Boyd with 6:54 left in the first quarter. He added touchdown jaunts of 16, 8, and 47 yards to put the hosts ahead 27-0. Boyd's four touchdowns came in a span of 14 minutes, 43 seconds of action. Quarterback Eric Williams tossed a 23-yard TD pass to Dustin Flowers 21 seconds before the Homecoming festivities commenced. Flowers scored on a two-yard run midway through the third quarter to make it 41-0 and keep the clock running. On the ensuing kickoff, kicker Ivan Herrera returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown. Joppatowne scored against the Tigers' second team defense with seven minutes remaining in the game. Jaelon Jones picked off a pair of passes and Levi Brookshire recovered a fumble which led to a touchdown. The Tigers (4-3) travel to Patterson Mill Thursday night. Comments are closed.
