The Elkton football team overcame three early fumbles and a plethora of penalties to pull away for a 28-10 triumph over visiting North East Friday night.
The Elks (2-0) fumbled on their first three possessions and fell behind 3-0 on a 27-yard field goal by the Indians' Drake Bare with 5:08 left in the first quarter. Elkton responded right away. Nolan Null connected with Tashawn Watters for a 49-yard scoring strike to put the hosts ahead 7-3 just 55 seconds after the North East field goal. Havre de Grace claimed its third straight football region title by defeating Bohemia Manor 48-14 Friday night.
The objective was straightforward.
Win and you're in. Bohemia Manor won. Perryville is done. The Eagles (6-4) clinched their sixth straight playoff appearance with a 28-0 romp over the host Panthers Friday night. Perryville (6-4) missed out on a postseason bid after losing its final three games. Big plays made a huge difference.
Jalen Giles scored four touchdowns, three coming on plays of more than 50 yards, to propel the North East football team to a 48-28 triumph over visiting Perryville Friday night. It's not that often a coach will laud his defense even though his team allowed 49 points.
Last Thursday night was one of those times for Perryville coach Chris Johnson. The Panthers did a decent job of limiting Harford Tech's explosive running back Jalen Dangerfield, but four critical turnovers – two of them returned for touchdowns – led to Perryville's undoing and a 49-12 loss to the unbeaten Cobras on Homecoming. Ahead 14-8, the Rising Sun football team performed calisthenics to prepare for the second half as coach Rich Opp paced the sideline.
"You're on the doorstep of a victory," Opp told his team. "You've got to kick the door down." That's precisely what they did. The Tigers earned their first win of the season by pulling away to upend host Joppatowne 28-8 Friday night. Dating back to last year, Rising Sun had lost 10 games in a row. Offensive linemen often wallow in a sea of sorrow and anonymity, noticed only after they commit a holding penalty or false start.
That was not the case Friday night as Perryville's o-line paved the way for a 56-26 triumph over host Rising Sun and then were lauded afterwards. Click read more to view photos from the Elkton football team's 47-20 triumph over Rising Sun Friday night.
Sometimes, it's not how you start that's crucial.
Perryville's football team demonstrated it's occasionally how you finish that matters most. The Panthers (2-0) clawed out of an early 13-point hole en route to a 21-19 triumph over Largo Friday night in a game played at Rising Sun High School. |
