The Elkton Elks defeated visiting North Caroline's Bulldogs in the East Regional final game Friday night, November 18. "We were in this football game to win it," said Elkton head coach Matt Feeney. The team had lost last year to North Caroline and their victory this year tasted sweet. "We wrote last years score on a white board to be a reminder of what happened, a lot of the guys that played last year did not want to have the same result," said Feeney. The Elks were the first to score with a touchdown and point after kick. North Caroline's Bulldogs were unable to move the ball in the first quarter. The Elks continued to score with two more touchdowns, which brought the score to 19-0 at the end of the first quarter. For Perryville football star Gabe Sherrod will use his final season of college eligibility in the Big 10 conference at one of the nation's premier programs.
Sherrod has committed to Michigan State University where he will play for highly-respected coach Mark Dantonio. On November 6, 2010, no one in their right mind could've predicted Gabe Sherrod would be chasing after Heisman Trophy candidates six years later. Yet that's now likely to happen this fall. The former Perryville High School quarterback has transformed himself into a quarterback's worst nightmare – a sack hungry defensive end. Following a sensational season at Delaware State University, Sherrod has elected to use his final year of eligibility at ACC school Syracuse. Sherrod is on schedule to graduate from Delaware State this spring with a math degree. NCAA rules allow student-athletes who have graduated to transfer to another Division I school without having to sit out a season. Both teams had a lot at stake in the football regular season finale between Perryville and host Rising Sun Friday night.
It was the Tigers who accomplished their goals with a convincing 38-8 triumph. Rising Sun's football team assured itself of at least a .500 record by routing host Harford Tech 42-7 Friday night.
The Tigers have won five of their last six games and are 5-4 heading into Friday night's finale against visiting Perryville. In a matchup of two Perryville graduates, Tyrell Hollingsworth's team topped Darryl Johnson's squad.
The Elkton football team rolled to a 41-0 triumph over injury-plagued Perryville in the Panthers' Homecoming game Thursday night.
