The Rising Sun football team had to wait an extra 25 minutes to use a play they'd been planning for four days.
It was well worth the wait. A lightning storm pushed back the kickoff for the North East's Homecoming game, but there was no stopping the Tigers (2-4) on this night. SLIDESHOW: The Tigers' Jack Stewart's catch and run in Monday night's loss to visiting Elkton. The Rising Sun football team lost 21-9 to visiting Elkton Monday night, October 5.
Trailing 14-9, the Tigers (1-3) drove down to the Elks' 23 before Kyair Cook picked off a pass. Travon Downs scampered 39 yards for a TD on the last play of the third quarter to make it 21-9. The Elks' defense dominated in the fourth quarter. As far as Perryville football coach Chris Johnson is concerned, this was much more like what he's accustomed to seeing.
An improving offensive line and a stout running game led by fullback Zac Zacerous propelled the Panthers to a 32-18 triumph over visiting Harford Tech Friday night. The Rising Sun football team snapped a 16-game losing streak by beating Bohemia Manor 37-14 last Friday night.
Getting closer but not close enough to retain the Susquehanna Bowl.
Unfailingly optimistic Perryville coach Chris Johnson remains confident his squad is poised to become a solid football team. But the inexperienced Panthers were not consistent enough to defeat a more polished Havre de Grace team Friday night as the Warriors came away with a 23-7 triumph over their cross-river rivals. Even after opening the season with two straight lopsided losses, Perryville football coach Chris Johnson remains convinced his team is on the verge of turning things around.
The Panthers played Aberdeen on even terms for most of the first half last Friday night before the visiting Eagles took the lead on a punt return touchdown and went on to a 27-7 triumph. Anyone who thinks the Perryville football team is going to be a pushover could be in for a big surprise.
It's true that the Panthers' three-year string of playoff appearances ended last season after a controversial 31-27 loss to North Harford in the regular season finale. And Perryville has lost most of the familiar names who were instrumental in that recent run of success. "People will be looking at us because we're young and we lost a lot of players," coach Chris Johnson said. "They may not think we're going to be very good." The Rising Sun football team is looking to rebound from an 0-10 season.
"Our daily goal is to improve," coach Rich Opp said. "Effort will give us progress. I keep telling the team that you're either getting better or you're getting worse." Junior Nate McCullough and senior Noah Juergens are competing for the starting quarterback job. Juergens is the incumbent having Jack Stewart midway through last season. Darryl Johnson and the Concord Mountain Lions are headed to the NCAA Division II national semifinals.
The Perryville High grad tied for team high with eight tackles as Concord defeated Bloomsburg 32-26 in the Super Region One Final Saturday in Athens, W.Va. Perryville football coach Chris Johnson was so convinced his team got robbed of a playoff berth clinching victory the hyper-intense but always polite coach couldn't wait for his turn to be interviewed.
"You can print this," Johnson said to reporters who were talking with the Panthers' TyRell Hollingsworth following Perryville's gut-wrenching 31-27 loss to host North Harford. "Fricking crooked. That interference call was the most crooked call I've ever seen." The call Johnson was referring to came with North Harford facing a 4th down and 9 from the Perryville 28 and the Panthers clinging to a 27-24 lead with less than a minute remaining. |
