Tough to find, hard to keep

At Rising Sun High, there are no current coaching vacancies for spring.
That's the exception not the rule.
"I think all the schools have a concern in the fall and spring due to the starting time of the games beginning at 3:30 p.m. and away game buses leaving at (about) 2 p.m. Most non-teachers or emergency coaches who may want to coach cannot get out (of) work to ride the bus, coach (the) games or practices," said Perryville athletic director George Rash in an email.
Finding coaches is not an easy task for other athletic directors in the high schools. The most needed are lacrosse and tennis coaches. "It's very hard to find people who have the work hours available to coach at 3 p.m. on a daily basis," said North East athletic director Gary Brown in an email.
The search is on to find spring sport coaches for Bohemia Manor High School's athletic director Bruce Kline.
"Lacrosse positions are very difficult to fill but all positions are difficult," said Kline in an email.
After finding someone who is qualified to fill the position it does not mean they will stay in the coaching position for very long. Many come and go.
"We have had quite a few assistant positions open as well, due to teachers transferring or leaving. Some years are better than others depending on the turnover," said Elkton athletic director Kelly Zimmerman in an email." This year we have 15 new coaches, and six of them are for the head position."
"I struggle asking parents to coach because their interest usually lies with their kids and not the team. I try to keep it with teachers and then (members) in the community who don't have kids involved. Unfortunately there are times that you have to include parents and you feel like you're tap dancing on eggshells," said Brown.
The salaries for head coaching positions in Cecil County Public Schools are football with top pay of $3,542. Field hockey, cross country, soccer, and volleyball are $2,454. Basketball and Wrestling head coaches earn $2,999. For spring sports head coaches all earn $2,454. Assistant coaches for football, basketball, and wrestling collect $1,908. All spring sports and all but football assistant positions earn $1,636.
