For half a century, Ruth Brown has attended Rosebank United Methodist Church.
One of her favorite services of the year is the Easter Sunrise Service. "We've had it on and off through the years for about 30 years, said Brown, of the service which is held outdoors if at all possible.
"We have it outdoors if the weather is good. If it rains or snows, it's inside," said Brown, who explained that the church teams up with it's sister church, Zion United Methodist, for the sunrise service. "If it's really cold, you have to wear a coat. Mostly it's cool, damp, and chilly. Occasionally it's pretty and nice but that's a rarity," said Brown.
Brown said the service will feature music without accompaniment. She said that for years, they moved the church piano outdoors but now that's been abandoned. The service lasts about 40 minutes and as many as 40 people turn out. She said it's come as you are.
The church is located at 1743 Telegraph Road. The sunrise service will begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday, April 1. All are welcome to attend. The church will also host a Good Friday service on Friday, March 30 at 7 p.m.
New Beginnings Christian Fellowship's Pastor Phil Meekins is used to preaching outdoors. From Memorial Day to Labor Day each year, he leads weekly church services at North East Town Park.
But he kicks off the season on Easter with a sunrise service. The service will be held at Elkmore Pavilion on April 1 at 6:30 a.m. "We get 40-50 people from all walks of life," said Pastor Meekins. He also said that members of New Beginnings bring friends and family members to the outdoor service.
"Come as you are but bring a jacket or blanket," said the pastor. He also said there are picnic tables for sitting but people are welcome to bring folding chairs.
"The sunrise service is a different atmosphere. It's like the early Christian church. There's no four walls. I like that atmosphere, it's freer," he said.
The service will have music accompaniment by way of computer. There will be a sermon and continental breakfast following the service, which lasts about an hour.
The Elkmore Pavilion is located in the Elkmore community off Oldfield Point Road, Elkton. All are welcome to attend.
