Are you smarter than Jim Gibney and the other members of Rising Sun's Historical Preservation Commission?
You will have a chance to find out during Saturday's Sunfest event. At the Historical Preservation booth during Sunfest, a 25 question quiz will be offered. The person who wins the contest will win a grand prize.
The prize for the winning entry includes the Taste of Rising Sun pack. This includes gift certificates from the following businesses: Bigfoots Steaks and Hoagies, Bottom of the Hill Bar and Grill, Buck's Restaurant, Four Seas Pizza Restaurant, Pizza Boy, Sue's Restaurant, Towne House Restaurant, Your Personal Chef, and The Rising Sun Herald.
In the event that there is more than one winner, winning entries will be put into a hat and the name of one winner will be drawn.
Gibney and his wife, Mary, explained how the quiz came about. During the town's 150th anniversary celebration a few years ago, there was consideration of creating a town quiz. The idea was shelved at the time and revived in time for Sunfest 2015. "We decided to challenge attendees at Sunfest to take a short quiz about Rising Sun history and trivia," said Gibney.
The quizzes will be distributed from noon to 2 p.m. To qualify for the prize, quizzes must be turned in by 3 p.m. A winner will likely be announced before Sunfest ends.
They are hoping the quiz will grow interest in the HPC and town history. "We're here to preserve and display the history and heritage of this town and the surrounding areas," said Gibney.
People who want to take the quiz may want to brush up before Saturday. "I don't think anybody will get 100 percent," said Gibney. "But I'm sure everybody will learn something." Gibney challenged the mayor and commissioners to take the quiz.
Future plans include expanding the quiz to potentially offer scholarships to high school students in the future.
The Rising Sun Historical Preservation Commission meets the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at town hall. Membership is $20 per year per family, $15 per individual, and $5 for students ages 12-18.
The HPC operates the town museum, is active with Sunfest and the Cecil County Christmas Parade, as well as hosts speakers and sponsors trips. The museum, on the third floor of town hall, will be open during Sunfest from 1-4 p.m. Historic t-shirt orders will be taken at the booth and there will be giveaways.
