Students share their faith out on the field

John Garvin IV wasn't exactly sure what he'd be seeing his son do at the annual Fields of Faith at Rising Sun High School.
"He's been keeping it a secret. It's important to him. I don't have a problem with it. I'm excited," said Garvin. "He didn't tell me it was in the stadium until we pulled in (to the school)."
Josh Garvin, 16, a junior at Perryville High School was gearing up to take to the field at rival Rising Sun High. He wasn't there for an athletic contest or to receive an award. Instead, he was planning to share his religious faith.
"I don't know how it's going to go. I've been out bow hunting and talking to the deer, practicing what I will say. I'm going to tell people how I've come to know God and how He's interacted with my life," said Josh Garvin.
Garvin said that although he's an honor student and works on a farm, he still takes time to read the Bible everyday. "I read it morning and night. I try the best I can. I'm nervous and I know God will get me through it," said Garvin.
He was one of three members of Janes United Methodist Church who provided testimony at Fields of Faith. Kalie Messner and Alexis Brewer were also warming up.
"I'm going to speak about God's love and how it never fails when everything else will," said Brewer, a 13-year-old seventh grader from Rising Sun Middle School. "I'm really excited to see what God's going to do to work through all the kids who turned out tonight."
Messner, a freshman at Rising Sun high, wrote her speech down. "No matter how hurt you are or where you are in life, God is always there for you. I'm really nervous about this. I don't like public speaking," said Messner. "When I said yes to doing this, I didn't realize how big the crowd would be."
Students and parents from throughout the county, attended this event which was supported by the Cecil County Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Justin Killough and Zach Fitzwater served as masters of ceremony. FCA staffer Brian Hamson provided the welcome. RSHS athlete Kylie McCurry sang The National Anthem. Other speakers included Mason Seymour, Bethany Wilson, Erin Harkey, Jess Borchardt, and Josh McCord. Brett Rush provided the music.
