Six months after opening her downtown Rising Sun theatre and arts center, Street Lamp Productions, Laura Woods is ready to devote more time to it.
Beginning this summer, Woods is scaling back to a part time role at her job at the Jennersville YMCA overseeing arts and theater programs. And will spend more time at Street Lamp. "On a personal level, it's now paying for itself. That makes me want to be here more. I'm excited for the camps in summer," said Woods.
She admits things got off to a rocky start. There were parking problems at the theater in the early days. Residents complained to town officials and police and parking was more defined and no parking signs installed. "We now have volunteer parkers at every event who guide people. Crothers Insurance loaned us four spots. I was upset about it. But we're trying to be a good neighbor. We've made people aware of where they can and can't park," she said. "It feels like it has settled down."
There are Zumba classes held in the dance room twice a week. Over the weekend, four bands took to the stage for a Battle of the Bands. A Princess Social, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society, was also held.
Peter Pan, featuring a cast of youths age 10-16 will be staged March 31, April 1, and for two shows on April 2. Tickets are available at www.streetlampproductions.org. "Shrek" will be staged in May and "Hairspray" is coming to the stage in August.
There are acting classes for children ages 9-15. On Mondays, rehearsals are underway for the Disney Cabaret which will be performed during Sunfest. Woods said she has also partnered with Rising Sun Parks and Recreation and the Rising Sun Arts Alliance. Both organizations will sponsor upcoming shows.
This summer will be busy at Street Lamp.
