So far, Courtney Spangler has a perfect record when it comes to applying for scholarships.
Spangler applied for her first scholarship ever and was recently notified that she has been named a Carson Scholar. Her efforts earned Spangler $1,000 for college and the distinction of earning a very prestigious scholarship.
Spangler's classmate and fellow Rising Sun High School junior, Alex Conrad picked up his fourth Carson Scholarship this year. He also earned the honor annually since eighth grade.
Dr. Ben Carson is a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and has directed neurosurgery at John's Hopkins Children's Hospital.
Each year, the Carson Fund honors the best and the brightest. Carson Scholars must have a grade point average of at least 3.75. They must also display humanitarian qualities by performing community service.
Both teams do a great deal of service in addition to making the grade.
Conrad is a member of the school's National Honor Society, Envirothon Team, and Robotics Club. He is a Boy Scout in Troop 143 of Port Deposit. He is currently an Order of the Arrow Scout and is working on the Eagle Rank. He volunteers at Ray of Hope Mission.
Conrad, the son of Eric and Sunny Conrad of Colora, has a 4.3 grade point average.
Conrad said the key to his success has been setting goals. "Keep a goal in mind and be open to service opportunities. Get out there and do," said Conrad.
Spangler has nearly a 4.0 grade point average. She plays for the high school basketball, lacrosse, and allied tennis teams and is a member of the National Honor Society. Within the community, she does service as a member of Job's Daughters. She volunteers to work at the snack shack for Rising Sun Little League. She also mentors at two middle schools and has a job at Conowingo Pool. She is the daughter of David and Holly Spangler of Rising Sun.
"This is pretty exciting. I never applied for any scholarship before. This was the first time and I won," said Spangler. "It's an honor to get this. Dr. Ben Carson is a very powerful person."
