Sheriff hopes to reel in families
by Lisa Tome
If you'd like to come face to face with the county sheriff out of uniform, you're about to have the chance.
And he may reel you into one of his favorite pastimes.
Sheriff Scott Adams will share one of his favorite hobbies, fishing, at an upcoming Rising Sun Branch Library presentation. Fishing with Sheriff Adams will be held Monday, April 30 at 6 p.m. at the branch. Pre-registration is requested. Reserve your seat by calling the library at 410-658-4025.
"I've been fishing since I was a little kid," said Adams, who remembers walking to fish at the Rising Sun town pond as a child. He would walk to the pond on West Main Street from Louise Court.
"Outside of baseball, I loved to fish. When I was 12, my parents and grandparents took me to Florida but I didn't want to go to Disney. I wanted to fish Lake Okeechobee, so that's what we did," said Sheriff Adams.
But like anyone who is an avid fisherman, the sheriff doesn't plan to reveal his favorite fishing locales. But he said he will share general areas where he has found success or enjoyed fishing.
He said he is happily sharing his love of the sport in hopes of getting people hooked on fishing instead of drugs.
"I really want to stress that with all the drug issues we have here, (in the county), fishing is something you can do as a family for a long time," Sheriff Adams said. "You have to be involved in your kids' lives more than just casual conversation. We are blessed to have world class fishing right here in our county and most people don't even know about it."
He not only loves fishing, he's also good at it. "Well I don't fish as often as I used to, that darn work thing gets in the way. But I try and fish as much as I can when I'm off. I've caught a 50 pound rockfish but probably the biggest fish was a white Marlin. I just caught a real nice rockfish this week in my kayak," Adams said last Thursday.
A library staffer said last week that there is still vacancies for the presentation.
The room can accommodate up to 50 people. More chairs will be added if necessary.
