Although it only lasts nine days, the Cecil County Fair is a year round pursuit for some.
According to April Hall Barczewski, Extension Educator for Cecil County's 4-H Youth Development, work on the fair never stops.
"We're starting to ramp up," said April Hall Barczewski. This year's fair starts in a little more than a month. It runs from July 22-30 at the Fair Hill Fairgrounds.
Recently, the fair market animals were tagged and weighed. Most of a day was dedicated to weighing in 11 beef feeder cows, 23 dairy steers, 35 meat goats, 42 market lambs, and 37 pigs. "We have a menagerie of breeding stock," said Hall Barczewski. Additional animals were logged in in January.
She said that the fair book, with the events, activities and entry forms comes out the first week of June. That's when the excitement begins. Already 4-H Club members are working on their fair club displays - trash cans, banners, billboards, and scrapbooks for their booths.
Once that book arrives, there will be a fair form support night held at the Cecil County Administration Building, Elkton. That will be held at the Extension office on June 16 from 6-8 p.m. Assistance will be offered filling out all forms, 4-H or other entries.
Those who want to support the fair may also obtain vehicle stickers or yard signs to promote the event.
Hall Barczewski said most of August is time off from the fair. But in September work starts for the next fair. She will begin ordering ribbons and prizes for the following year in order to obtain discounted rates.
"August is for recuperating. But it really does go on all year round. The Fair Board meets monthly. And the Junior Fair Board meets six times throughout the year," she said. "Maybe in December you forget about the fair. But about then the big boxes of ribbons arrive."
Leading the fair board this year are president Al Miller, vice president Don Moore, secretary Debbie Harris, and treasurer Emily Berkey. The Junior Fair Board, many of whom are 4-H members, are charged with the task of social media and promotion. The Cecil County Fair was established in 1954.
