After teaching at Rising Sun Middle School for nine years, David Beard has been named assistant principal of the George A. Smith Middle School in Lancaster County's Solanco School District.
Beard taught physical education at Rising Sun, where he also coordinated the intermural program and started a skate night that turned the school's gymnasium into a roller rink.
He also coordinated the Tiger Trot 5K fundraiser to pay for student incentives.
Beard was a nominee for 2014 Cecil County Teacher of the Year and has been involved with the Cecil County Parks and Recreation's Middle Schools Mover program since 2012.
"It will be a great loss for Cecil County," said Cynthia Kutsishin, assistant principal of Rising Sun Middle. "We're really going to miss him. He has been an asset to our school and we wish him the best."
Beard said he is excited to be joining the Solanco School District. "Every experience I've had around the leadership at Solanco has shown me that this district is progressive, innovative, and only makes decisions that are best for students. I'm extremely happy to have the opportunity to work with [Smith Middle School principal] Paul Gladfelter and the staff at Smith Middle School."
Beard earned a dual degree Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership, and Curriculum and Instruction, from the American College of Education in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education from Lock Haven University. He is a Warwick High School, Lancaster County, graduate. Beard began his new job on July 28. He replaced Christina McLaughlin, who has become principal of Solanco's Providence Elementary School.
“We are excited to welcome David to the Solanco community,” Solanco Superintendent Dr. Brian Bliss said. “He brings great enthusiasm, a strong work ethic, and a caring approach. David is certainly looking forward to witnessing firsthand the great things Solanco students can do.”
Beard will work closely with Solanco Middle School Principal Paul Gladfelter.
