Officials from Cecil County Department of Emergency Services announced that Captain David Barr, Sr. has died.
Barr, 65, of Port Deposit, was injured while on duty on Friday, October 25. He had been a fire police officer for 13 years. He is also a member of Water Witch Fire Company and is a retired firefighter from the Perry Point Veterans Administration Medical Center.
On Friday, October 25, the Community Fire Company of Perryville was called about 3:20 p.m. for a motor vehicle accident on westbound Route 40 in the area of the Relax Inn. The fire company cleared the accident area but fire police remained on scene to assist Perryville Police with traffic control.
Barr was wearing a reflective vest and was surrounded by flares used in traffic direction when he was struck by a 2009 Hyundai. The Hyundai was driven by Robert Clyde Nickle IV, 27, of Perryville.
The accident has placed a spotlight on Maryland's new "Move Over Law" which became effective October 1. The Barr family and the accident have been featured on Baltimore news and in Baltimore newspapers.
The family also set up an account to help offset expenses. The account is the David Barr fund at Perry Point Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 5, Perry Point, MD 21902. The credit union is located at the corner of Avenue D and Fifth Street, Perry Point.
Arrangements will be forthcoming.
