Perryville's Chamber is taking time to regroup and reorganize.
Therefore there will be no Spring Fling this year.
Chamber President Charles "CJ" Heitz said that thus far, the consensus among the membership is to cancel that event for this year. A formal vote within the chamber will be held on Thursday.
Heitz said that the current cancellation is expected to pay dividends in the future. He took over leadership of the group within the last few months.
The new plan will have the chamber combining their two major events - Spring Fling and Autumnfest - into a single event.
Heitz said the chamber was in danger of becoming dormant late last year.
He said the immediate goals are to revitalize the group, fine tune the business plan, and then to hold the one major event and several "micro" events throughout the year.
He also wants to focus on bringing more benefits, seminars, networking opportunities, and training for chamber members. "We want to make an impact year round instead of during two events," said Heitz.
With the group just getting on their feet, Heitz said they don't want to put together a subpar event. "This (canceling) is the right thing to do. We need time to plan it correctly so it will be a success rather than hold an event for nostalgia's sake," he said.
"With the transition of me coming in, it was risky with planning Spring Fling. We only had two months to put it together. It would not be beneficial for the chamber, the town, the vendors, or the volunteers,” he said. "We want to have a larger event and we need more time to plan it. We could have thrown something together, absolutely. But would it be beneficial to all parties involved? Absolutely not."
Heitz is president of the organization. Abid Siddiq is the vice president. Tim Kenny is treasurer. Stacy Ziegler is secretary.
