Both Elkton and North East are hoping to cash in this holiday season with events geared to families and the business community.
Cash for Christmas started November 1 in downtown Elkton and continues through December 19. During this event, shoppers will receive receipts from participating merchants. Consumers then turn in their receipts at the Elkton Alliance no later than December 19. For every $10 spent, a raffle ticket will be issued. A $500 prize will be awarded to whomever spends the most money in downtown during the contest. There will also be raffle drawings for $250 and for a gift basket.
The annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony is set for Friday, December 5 at 5 p.m. This celebration will begin at Union Hospital with a tree lighting. Santa will arrive by way of a fire engine. All in attendance will then be invited to walk to the Elkton Visitor Center, 101 East Main Street, for caroling, pictures with Santa (bring your own camera), and refreshments. Union Hospital will also have a poinsettia sale as part of this event.
The sixth annual downtown Elkton Cookie Throwdown will be held on Friday, December 12 from 5-8 p.m. Selected merchants will host voting for the public's favorite cookie. For more information about this contest call 410-398-5076.
Elkton's Christmas celebration continues on Friday, December 19 with Old Fashioned Christmas from 5-8 p.m. There will be carriage rides, caroling, and more.
One of the highlights in North East this holiday season will be the annual Cecil County Christmas Parade. Don Scott will be the grand marshal for this event which is set for Saturday, December 6 at noon.
Those who want to participate in the parade may do so by filling out an application which is online at www.northeastmd.org. The participation deadline has been extended.
Santa will be in the house beginning November 28.
North East's Santa House is located at 122 S. Main Street and children can take photos with Santa. Santa House hours begin Friday and run through Sunday, December 21. Friday hours are 6-8 p.m. Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon and 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. and Sundays from 1-3 p.m. There will also be special Christmas Eve hours from 6-8 p.m. This event is sponsored by the North East Chamber of Commerce and is free and open to the public.
North East's annual Christmas Tree Lighting will be held in the town park at 5:30 p.m. on November 28. Welcome Santa to town and sing carols.
North East's Merchant's Open House will be held from November 28-30. Merchants will offer specials and there will be free refreshments.
