Officials at Cecil County Parks and Recreation hope your child soars with a brand new pilot program.
The Sports and Arts Club starts the first day of school, September 5.
The Sports and Arts Club is being offered exclusively to students who attend Rising Sun, Calvert, and Bay View elementary schools. Since it's a new program, officials at Parks and Rec. want to fine tune it before opening it up to more schools in the future.
Initially, as a way to expose students to both sports and arts, children will be exposed to kickball, dodgeball, wiffle ball, and soccer. With the arts, there will be painting, drawing, and sketching. As the participants settle in, they will be allowed to choose their area of interest.
The club is open only on school days. Students from the three schools will be bussed from their schools to Cecil Arena. The sports and arts programming runs until 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. To accommodate early dismissal on Wednesdays, the program runs from dismissal until 5:30 p.m.
Parents then pick up their children from the Arena on North East Road by 5:30 p.m. Cost of the club is $15 per week. But parents must pay $150 in advance for the 10-week session.
Recreation assistant Hope Wilburn is actively working to get the word out about the new program. She said that so far, enrollment has been slow. This week, local businesses in the Rising Sun area will be passing out flyers promoting the program.
