New home building climbs

Last year was a year of rehabilitation for the Town of North East.
In all, four single family homes in town were rehabbed. According to North East Town Planner Betsy Vennell, one of the homes was purchased in a dilapidated condition for $27,000. It was rehabbed and then sold for $229,000. Additionally, an apartment building containing multiple units also got renewed.
Single family home building is on the rise in Cecil.
The plans for the Ridgely Forest community in North East have changed. A new developer, WORF, LLC, of Fallston, has now partnered with Ryan Homes.
Original plans for the development were for 637 dwellings to be built in six phases. The new plan includes 544 homes to be completed in eight phases.
That includes 340 single family homes, 62 town homes, and 142 duplexes. Public hearings on this new plan will be held in late February and in March.
The Town of North East issued business licenses to 22 new businesses in 2017. Five of those were temporary businesses.
Cecil's building boom is underway.
Jeff Thorpe, Plans Reviewer for the Cecil County Department of Permits and Inspections, said January was busier than normal for single family home permit requests.
He said that the five requests for permits is atypical for January, "I think we're going to have a real busy spring if the economy keeps going the way it's going," Thorpe said.
The mid year numbers for the Department of Permits and Inspections also show the rise in single family home building. In fiscal year 2017, in January, there were 39 single family home permits issued. This year, during the same span, there have been 54.
Elkton has also been experiencing a commercial boom. According to Building Official Chip Bromwell, "It's been a long time. It's very positive that people are willing to invest in the town," said Bromwell.
Central Tavern is coming to the former Lyons Pharmacy. Vows at the Mitchell House will provide a wedding venue in downtown Elkton. Crave Eatery will have a fixed site restaurant at 420 North Bridge Street. Elk River Brewery will come to downtown Elkton within a few months.
And the long awaited Starbucks is coming to the Seasons at Routes 40 and 213. According to Bromwell, the plans for the Starbucks have changed.
The Starbucks will now be in the Seasons building. An addition will be built on for the Seasons.
