James Hope had heart surgery.
Following the surgery, he spent a month and two weeks in cardiac rehab.
To keep from losing ground and in an effort to keep his heart in shape, Hope joined Healthy Lifestyles Fitness Center, the gym for those ages 55 and over inside the County Administrator Building.
"I come Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. At least three times a week, sometimes more. I wanted to keep up with this and I'm trying to get in shape," said Hope, 79. "I had a heart valve replaced and some other heart issues. I had open heart surgery."
Hope said going to the fitness center has impacted his health.
"I have arthritis and age. I feel better since I started coming here. You feel much better when You come here," said Hope.
While Hope is fairly new to the fitness center, Orville Potts, 78, has been a member of Healthy Lifestyles since it opened. The gym was in two other locations before the permanent home was established on Chesapeake Boulevard.
"I used to jog five miles every day and that got too hard on my knees," said Potts. He now goes to the fitness center three ties a week.
"Every day, when I get out of bed, I look forward to coming here," said Potts.
