Bud McFadden remembers the first Sunfest - it was held in 1982.
It was small scale, impacting only Queen Street, and the late Deacon Brumfield played his dobro while standing on a hay wagon. The Town also borrowed a moon bounce as entertainment for children.
"The goal was to get people to Rising Sun. Sunfest almost petered out but it was brought back by the RSBA (Rising Sun Business Association now known as the Greater Rising Sun Chamber)," said McFadden.
"One year, we had a group of hot air balloons participate. They were tethered and people could go for short, tethered rides. I remember coming into town and seeing those balloons. It was beautiful," he said. "Anytime there is good weather, Sunfest is a festive event. Even on a rainy day, it's good."
McFadden, a retired businessman and downtown property owner, has never missed a Sunfest. This year, he is coordinating the Sunfest Parade. He said that the partnership between the Town, chamber, and groups such as the Rising Sun Lions, American Legion Post 194, and Boys and Girls Club is what makes the event work.
"It's always exciting and it's grown over the years," he said.
